Some microscopic algae consume energy to produce bioluminescence. In the video the adaptive advantage this eneegético spending're supposed to microorganisms is explained.
Algae "Noctiluca scintillans" are preyed upon by other components of the body transparent zooplankton, copepods, ingesting noctilucae that become too bright. Thus, copepods become very conspicuous and its own predators (fish larvae) distinguish them more easily. Thus, the predators noctilucae made some alarms to attract help.
